Whitby has talent, so there wasn't a seat to be had in the packed Whitby Pavilion Theatre when Whitby's Apollo Players presented their show Apollo Players Do Broadway! on 8 June.
No place for a somnambulist here then!

The stupendous spectacle which stimulated the senses was a sensation, loved by the audience which contained an axtraordinary number of young people who behaved impeccably and helped the show to move along at
a cracking pace.

The whole thing had been put together by their musical director Chris Wales, the multi-faceted musical maestro who made the two hours of piano playing fly by as he accompanied soloist vocalists and all-singing, all-dancing groups equally well with energetic effeciency.

He was ably assisted throughout by Daniel Brice on percussion and Matthew Harrison on follow spot.

Young Morgann Russell, an agile acrobat, was acclaimed by an astounded audience.

The more mature witches momentarily melted away our worries with whimical wickedness as they wove their spells.

The chorus created a cornucopia of choral charm.

The fabulous Francoise Russell frequently flabberghasted us with her fledgelings’ firm footwork as she had prepared all the choreography giving the show style and grace.

Martin McLachlan flourished as the furtive Fagin as he formalised a school of scullduggery for his unfortunate urchins in a cameo performance of Pick a Pocket or Two.

The whole evening was cemented together by the well loved host and compere Ian Dobson.

Wake up Whitby.

The pantomime people are spreading their net.

Be ready for what is coming next.

I RECENTLY visited the theatre section of Whitby Pavilion for the first time.

Firstly, may I say what an asset to the town this theatre is – a pleasure to visit.

My second reason for writing is to congratulate the Apollo Players on a splendid performance of the various Broadway musicals.

It would be unfair to single out any one performer but I must congratulate the younger members for an exceptionally talented evening’s entertainment.

Nowadays we hear so many negative remarks about the younger generation but credit must go to this band of youngsters who gave their all to entertain us and obviously enjoyed themselves at the same time.

Keep it up, well done everyone!
