WHITBY Fire Brigade has condemned irresponsible people who set fire to a pile of rubbish dumped in a field close to homes in The Ropery.
Firefighters were alerted by a resident on Tuesday at around 10.30pm who was concerned the fire could spread to nearby houses.

The rubbish including old furniture – which it’s believed had been fly-tipped – was set alight just 10 metres away from a garden fence.

No-one was supervising the fire.

A spokesman for Whitby Fire Brigade said the fire was quite big and it could be seen from the other side of town.

“It was a raging inferno,” he said.

“It was 10 metres away from a fence and the smoke was billowing.

“A nearby resident was concerned it was going to set his shed alight.

“People shouldn’t be tipping rubbish and setting it alight.

“They should dispose of it properly. It’s irresponsible.”

Firefighters took around 20 minutes to put out the fire using a hose reel.

The spokesman said police were also called but Sgt Steve Pearse of Whitby Police said they had no record of them attending and it must have been officers out on patrol who came across the incident.
