EIGHT Whitby people have completed a 15-week course to gain their level two Community Sports Leader Award.
The award is run nationally by the British Sports Trust and implemented at a local level by Adult Education.

The course provides students with knowledge of organising and delivering sports events, safety aspects, the structure of sport in the UK, health and fitness, principles and practice in running sports events, how to adapt sporting activities and planning and leadership techniques.

The students came from Whitby Community College and attended the course at Caedmon School.

This was the first time they had to complete a day of first aid training as part of the award.

As part of the course the students must complete 10 hours of voluntary work in a community sport setting and as an end task, they delivered a structured sports session for 20 young people, with activities including uni-hoc and kwik cricket.

Matt Hewison, course tutor said: “All the students have shown a great level of enthusiasm, dedication and self control to complete this very challenging course.

“They have all developed their sports leadership skills and communication techniques to now hopefully go out into the community sports sector and deliver sporting activity.

“Some of the group have already started coaching at schools, along with Whitby Hockey Club, Whitby Wizards Basketball Club and the Youth Service.”
