RUMOURS over the future of Whitby's Somerfield supermarket have been denied by the company.
There had been talk that the Co-operative Group (Co-op), the UK’s fifth largest supermarket chain, was going to take it over and the store would soon be selling white goods.

But a Somerfield spokeswoman said rumours of the Co-op takeover had probably followed speculation in the national press and there was no definite deal.

She added: “Our stores are smaller than other supermarkets and we haven’t got the space to sell white goods.

“In some stores the biggest item on sale is a microwave or a small barbecue.”

It has been reported the Co-op is in talks about buying rival Somerfield and discussions are at an early stage and the Co-op said there would be a “strong fit” between the two companies.
