Challenge Shield rivals in a thrilling tussle

SLEIGHTS Bowling Club saw off the competition of Filey and Seamer but were held to a thrilling draw by Esk Valley rivals Castleton.
The first leg of the annual match for the Challenge Shield against Castleton was played at Sleights in a curtailed game due to heavy rain.
The week concluded with the club's Gordon Fletcher Pairs with partners drawn at random. It is a knockout over 11 ends with four woods each person.
The 17 teams played down to the semi-finals on the Saturday and completed it on the Sunday.
The first semi-finalists were Eddie White with Hilda Brown against John Pybus with Joyce Blythman. This was level at 7 each with one end to play, but it was Eddie and Hilda who won through on the last end.
The other semi was between Mick Dean with Olive Tordoff against Brian Raw with Lucy White. And it was Mick and Olive who won through, both playing on top form.
In the final, it was Mick and Olive who continued to play more consistently than Eddie and Hilda to end up worthy winners.
The previous week the club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a fun bowls afternoon and faith tea.
President Paul Shardlow cut the celebration cake, gave a short speech and wished the club continued success.
Sleights beat Filey at home 108-92: B Lawson, O Tordoff, F Lawson lost 15-25, E White, P Shardlow, C Cowen won 21-8, L White, A Fletcher, P Harrison lost 19-20, J Pybus, A Rutland, C Shardlow lost 17-18, J R Moore, D Marshall, L Campbell won 19-14, J Moore, H Brown, M Swalwell won 17-7.
Sleights beat Seamer at home 98-82: L White, P Perry, I Pearson lost 16-21, T Reid, E Clark, I Roberts lost 9- 20, J Dixon, P Harrison, L Campbell won 14-10, S Harrison, R Clark, B Raw won 18-10, I Harrison, C Cowen, C Lonsdale, won 14-9, E White, E Sanderson won 27-12.
Sleights drew against Castleton at home 55-55: T Bogg, F Lawson, C Lonsdale, P Harrison won 12-5 against G Taylor, M Cook, D Thompson, D Cook; E Sanderson, P Shardlow, J Rudsdale, M Swalwell lost 3-18 to W Fawcett, C Walker, H Boocock, M Fawcett; I Harrison, B Lawson, P Rudsdale, E Clark won 11-6 against P Smith, JB Thompson, J Harrison, S Smith; S Harrison, O Tordoff, T Reid, L Campbell lost 10-15 against L Pearson, J Liddel, A Pearson, J Pearson; J Pybus, R Clark, H Brown, C Cowen, won 9-5 against J Gallon, T Sanderson, A Robson, R Banks; E White, J Dixon, D Metcalfe, C Shardlow won 10-8 against H Farrow, B Mould, E Thomson, A Liddel.
