THE crowd who visited the Skelder Banks circuit of Whitby Moto-cross Club witnessed a superb display of riding from former Whitby man Jordan Rose as he swept to overall victory with three out of three race wins.
Durham charger Barry Turnbull and Matt Stephenson of Huddersfield had no answer to the speed of Rose and had to settle for the minor placings.
But they did have the satisfaction of first and second places in the expert invitation.
With excellent weather and the track in superb condition for fast and furious racing (no dust) late entry, Rose proved to be in a class of his own, throwing the big Honda round this spectacular venue with the supreme confidence of a rider at the top of his game.
While Stephenson couldn't match the pace, he proved inch perfect on lines and was consistently fast enough to snatch a brace of seconds, giving Turnbull all sorts of problems trying to stay with him, until bike trouble in the last leg dropped him down the leaderboard to finally finish a disappointing sixth overall.
His riding deserved better, but moto-cross is rarely fair as Glaisdale flyer Stuart Houlston found out, suffering two punctures which dropped him out of contention.
Turnbull, Stephen Heighton and Karl Schulze all shared a third place in each leg, but it was Turnbull's tenacity to hang in there and stick with the leaders which earned him the runner-up berth.
The Junior Championship saw Graham Parker walk away with the spoils with two race wins and a second with David Blackburn snatching the second leg win.
Danny Page from Pickering was on the pace but could not find a way past the hard-riding Blackburn. Paul Ferguson grabbed a well-earned third place in the second leg.
Ryan Brewer was unbeatable in junior clubman as he emulated Rose in the expert class, walking off with all three race wins from Mathew Readman of Thirsk.
Ride of the day was from Mark Smith of Stockton as he endeavours to break into the cut and thrust of this moto-cross sport.
Never one to lack confidence in his own ability, he had to ring the KTM bike's neck to get every cc to work for him around this undulating circuit.
He finished with a fourth and two thirds on his first taste of the Skelder track.
Phil Taylor had a disastrous start to the junior intermediate, scoring only six points in the first leg. He had it all to do and he almost turned it round as he fought his way back up the leaderboard with a third in the second moto and a brilliant gutsy ride to secure the win from Chris Rogerson in the last leg.
But it was too much to ask as he finally finished in fifth place overall, with the confident Mathew Robinson in top spot with two race wins and a third.
