A WHITBY girl is celebrating success in her sport after winning a sailing competition.
Meghan Fletcher-Booth (13) from Rose Avenue scooped the title in Rutland two weeks ago at the RS500 inland championship for sailing.
Proud mum Deb Fletcher said: "I have never known anyone so young win the RS500 inland championships and I am just so chuffed.
"We all sail in our family but she has just done so well."
Her winners' trophy is currently in Harrogate with fellow winner and sailing partner Mike Saul, but she will be re-united with it next week.
Meghan hails from a family of sailors as her mum, dad Wayne and 15-year-old sister Pippa all sail.
Meghan beat off a field of adult competition with only one other competitor in her section of 16 being aged under 18.
She participated in four races on the Saturday but as there was no wind on the Sunday, her other two races were cancelled.
She obtained two first places, a third and a fourth place.
The youngster only got her first boat four years ago and it is proving to be an expensive pastime.
"The costs are astronomical, about £5,000 to £6,000, so we are looking for sponsorship," said Mrs Fletcher.
Megan sails an RS Feva/RS200 and RS500 all over the country and also took part in the European Championships in Italy this year, finishing sixth in the RS 500.
She races at Scaling Dam every Wednesday night and most weekends – it is such a big part of her life, she sails 48 weekends a year.
This year, she was selected for regional squad training with the North Zone Squad by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and next year she hopes to be selected for the national intermediate squad.
She travelled to Hayling Island on the south coast at the end of May to compete in the nationals in the RS Feva and narrowly missed out on second in her fleet due to a breakage on her boat.
She is now involved in squad training with the RYA, the main sailing body which selects the national squad in categories of national, intermediate, north and south squad.
Meghan secured her place in the north squad and is aiming for the intermediate squad next year.
Racing costs a lot of money and travelling 8,000 miles a year totals £2,800 alone.
"I don't have any accommodation costs as I travel in our motorhome," she said.
"This does save quite a lot as I sail throughout the winter when it is too cold to stay in a tent and would need to stay in a bed and breakfast," said Meghan.
She can advertise a company on her sail, boat, or clothing.
Anyone who can help Meghan with her sponsorship can call Deb on (07881) 7501071 or email pipandmegfletcher@msn.com
