A NOSTALGIC event remembering the Second World War is to branch out into Whitby this year bringing in thousands of people to the town
The Wartime Weekend which is on next Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s stations be transformed back to the 1940s.

There will be parades, songs and music and wartime displays in Pickering Town Centre while Pickering Showground will be hosting Europe at War re-enactments and military vehicles.

There will also be evening entertainment at the showground featuring live music from the era in the form of the Glenn Miller Orchestra next Friday at 7.30pm, The Royal Airforce Shades of Blue Orchestra next Saturday plus support acts including Fiona Harrison, a 1940s entertainer from 7.30pm.

Hundreds of people in civilian and military dress will help recreate the troubled yet exciting times of the era and historic vehicles will trundle through the streets while there will be wartime songs and music filling the air and displays, demonstrations parades and stalls to keep everyone entertained.

Along the NYMR line Levisham will become Le Visham - part of occupied France with German troops encamped in the station paddock. There will be re-enactment scenarios, music and a railway history carriage.

At Goathland the Home Guard will be stationed with a field kitchen, there will be military and civilian vehicles, a desert display, shire horse display and musical entertainment.

Most of the action will be at Grosmont when the village will be invaded by American troops who will be giving displays and demonstrations and there will be shelter displays, swing and sound demonstrations stalls, military and civilian vehicles and a tiger moth aircraft display at 2pm on both the Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday a military parade will begin at 11.30am followed by a remembrance service and the laying of a wreath in memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice - their lives.

Whitby Pavilion will also be transformed back to the war era with a host of top entertainment lined-up.

Next Friday evening an audience at Whitby Pavilion Theatre will be taken on a rollercoaster ride of nostalgia music hall featuring tributes to the world’s greatest stars including Glenn Miller, Fred Astair and Buddy Holly. Rolling Back The Years starts at 7.30pm on Friday tickets are priced £12 adults, concessions £11.

The Clive Collins Band will be getting everyone up dancing at 7.30pm on the Saturday at the Pavilion in association with Whitby and District Tourism Association.

With steam trains arriving at the station from 5.30pm to bring visitors in to see the band they will be entertaining the crowds with some classic dance numbers.

Sunday at 8pm sees Company B present at 1940s revue in the theatre with all seats priced at just £8.

The company will present entertaining songs and dance comedy sketches in what is being billed as a show for all the family.
