ENTRIES are coming in thick and fast for the third Whitby Gazette Pride of Whitby Awards which takes place next month.
And thanks to local individuals and businesses, the event looks like being the biggest and best yet.
The event takes place at Whitby Pavilion on Friday 10 October and is being backed this year by Whitby's Somerfield.
The store, in Flowergate, is su
pplying drinks on arrival as well as pledging food for the buffet which has been organised by award-winning chef Rob Green with its preparation by a team of chefs including some rising stars from Yorkshire Coast College.
Ray Scott, manager of Somerfield, said: "We're pleased to be backing this year's Whitby Gazette Pride of Whitby Awards.
"I think it is a great idea to celebrate the efforts of local people and I hope our help will contribute to a successful night and to help raise money for local good causes."
The Whitby Catch is also helping out by supplying all the seafood for the buffet.
Entertainment on the night is courtesy of the ever popular Mark Liddell and joining him will be the lads of popular local band Yabbadabbadoo.
And playing in the reception area as guests arrive, Zephyr, from Whitby Community College will be impressing everyone with their wind instrument skills.
Teacher Bob Butterfield leads the group which includes Caroline Anderson, Joey Fowles, Kelly Davis, Jack Hogarth, Danielle Callaghan, Sarah Robson, Rosie Ferguson and Sam Thomas.
As ever, Jimmy Lupton will be on hand to compere the night's proceedings as will Channel 4 chief news correspondent Alex Thomson – work commitments permitting.
And Whitby Mayor Coun Steve Smith and his wife Amanda will hand over the awards while the borough's deputy mayor Coun Peter Booth and Whitby MP Robert Goodwill, will also be in attendance.
And Rob Smith, of auctioneers Richardson and Smith, will be conducting the auction again to help raise hundreds of pounds for good causes in the district.
Sharon Wilkinson of Whitby's Flower Design has once again pledged bouquets for the winner of each category while Baker Print Ltd, of East Barnby, have produced the tickets free of charge.
Darren Draper of Draper's Carpets will supply a red carpet for the guests to enter in style.
The whole event is organised without incurring any costs which means all the money from ticket sales, donations, auction of promises and raffle goes to local good causes – to be nominated by Whitby Gazette readers after the event.
Both previous events have raised just less than £2,000 each time and last year, 11 good causes were handed a cheque for around £175 each.
The causes nominated last year were West Cliff Primary School, Caring Together, Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Blind and Partially Sighted Society, Whitby Salvation Army Branch, Whitby and District Rifle Club, St Catherine's Whitby Day Hospice, Whitby Jets, Whitby Dog Rescue, Raw Animal Rescue, Fishburn Park U9s FC and Sleights Singers.
Whitby Gazette deputy editor Jon Stokoe said: "Once again, individuals and businesses from in and around the town have been so supportive and generous in helping to make this event happen.
"I hope now that readers will pick up their pens or get typing (click here ) to nominate people for the Magnificent Seven categories and give our judges a headache when it comes to choosing a winner.
"And on top of celebrating people's achievements we hope to raise even more money than last time so we can help out more local good causes."
The three nominees for each category will all feature in a special supplement which will appear in the Whitby Gazette on Tuesday 7 October.
