THE awards shortlist for next Friday's Whitby Gazette Pride of Whitby Awards is now complete.
All 21 nominees are listed below this story and will feature in a 12-page supplement in Tuesday's Whitby Gazette.
The ceremony at Whitby Pavilion next Friday (10 October) made possible by many generous people and businesses – especially Whitby's Som
erfield store – promises to be a night to remember.
And with the addition of a raffle for this year's event, as well as the auction of promises, hopes are high to break the £2,000 mark this time around and boost local good causes still further.
Tickets which - cost £5 - are limited to 300 for the event at the Pavilion, which opens its doors at 7pm, and are on a first-come, first-served basis.
Last year, 11 good causes were each handed a cheque for around £175 each.
The causes nominated were West Cliff Primary School, Caring Together, Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Blind and Partially Sighted Society, Whitby Salvation Army Branch, Whitby and District Rifle Club, St Catherine's Whitby Day Hospice, Whitby Jets, Whitby Dog Rescue, Raw Animal Rescue, Fishburn Park U9s FC and Sleights Singers.
This year's event has been made possible by a whole host of individuals and businesses.
The Somerfield store, in Flowergate, is supplying drinks on arrival as well as pledging food for the buffet which will be organised by award-winning chef Rob Green and prepared by a team of chefs including some rising stars from Yorkshire Coast College.
Ray Scott, manager of Somerfield, said: "We're pleased to be backing this year's Whitby Gazette Pride of Whitby Awards.
"I think it is a great idea to celebrate the efforts of local people and I hope our help will contribute to a successful night and to help raise money for local good causes."
The Whitby Catch is also helping out by supplying all the seafood for the buffet.
Entertainment on the night is courtesy of the ever popular Mark Liddell and joining him will be the lads of local band Yabbadabbadoo.
And playing in the reception area as guests arrive, Zephyr, from Whitby Community College will be impressing everyone with their wind instrument skills.
Teacher Bob Butterfield leads the group which includes Caroline Anderson, Joey Fowles, Kelly Davis, Jack Hogarth, Danielle Callaghan, Sarah Robson, Rosie Ferguson and Sam Thomas.
As ever, Jimmy Lupton will be on hand to compere the night's proceedings along with Channel 4 chief news correspondent Alex Thomson – work commitments permitting.
And Whitby Mayor Coun Steve Smith and his wife Amanda will hand over the awards while the borough's deputy mayor Coun Peter Booth will also be in attendance.
Rob Smith, of auctioneers Richardson and Smith, will be conducting the auction again to help raise hundreds of pounds for good causes in the district.
Sharon Wilkinson of Whitby's Flower Design has once again pledged bouquets for the winner of each category while Baker Print Ltd, of East Barnby, have produced the tickets free of charge and Darren Draper of Draper's Carpets will supply a red carpet for the guests to enter in style.
Whitby Gazette editor Damian Holmes said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to recognise the many, many people who help make our community what it is.
"The awards night is a superb event that has gone from strength to strength since it was started in 2006.
"We are extremely grateful to everybody who has helped out in some way, particularly Somerfield and Scarborough Borough Council.
"Now we just want as many people as possible to come along on the night and join us in toasting the men and women and boys and girls who really are the pride of Whitby."
