THREE fishermen had to be rescued from a drifting Whitby-based trawler 13 miles out to sea on Thursday night.
Tynemouth RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat was launched at 1.20am after the skipper of the 12 metre, 36 tonne trawler Solan called Humber Coastguard for help after the boat’s gearbox failed, leaving it without power 13 miles east of Sunderland.

Lifeboat Spirit of Northumberland and six volunteer crew rushed to the assistance of the stricken trawler, reaching them in 30 minutes.

The lifeboat crew attached a tow rope to the Solan and took her and the three stranded fishermen to North Shields fish quay.

Volunteer RNLI lifeboat crewman, David Thompson, said: “This was a textbook rescue carried out efficiently and without fuss, returning the Solan and her crew to shore, enabling them to carry out repairs on the gearbox and return to Whitby.

“Mechanical failures like this can happen even to the best maintained vessels but the RNLI is always on hand to ensure the safety of people at sea.”
