FOUR days, 60 miles and 316,680 strokes of the oar later the restored William Riley arrived back on Sunday afternoon.
It was an epic journey undertaken by the former lifeboat, leaving South Shields on Thursday before heading to Sunderland, Hartlepool, Staithes and Whitby in a bid to raise £50,000.
The arrival coincided with the town's annual Lifeboat Weekend and the Blessing of the Boats ceremony taking place on the Fish Pier.
Pete Thomson, Whitby Lifeboat press officer who accompanied the rowers, said it had been a momentous occasion.
He said: "I'm surprised with the reception. That amazed me. It's incredible, quite emotional."
Dave Charlton, who bought the William Riley off eBay for £1,200 and donated her back to Whitby, made the last leg of the journey after being transferred onboard off Sandsend.
He said the experience had been unforgettable: "It felt utterly brilliant. It was a real thrill."
