CROWDS flocked into Whitby Railway Station to welcome the iconic locomotive the Sir Nigel Gresley to the town for the first time.

The A4 Pacific made history with its visit and was given a rapturous reception by the hundreds who turned out.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway general manager Philip Benham said: "This is a very important weekend in railway history.

"This will be the first and last time that Whitby will be able to welcome an iconic engine of this type."

There will be a more detailed report in Friday's Whitby Gazette.
